St. Catherine Program
The groundbreaking St. Catherine of Siena Scholars Program is unique to Queen of Peace. Similar to a college-level independent study, this program invites students to choose a topic they are especially excited to research – beyond their normal course load.
Catherine Scholars study under mentors from the community. A Chicago Tribune sports editor, a professor at Rush and a senior vice president at Northern Trust Bank are just a few of the people who have volunteered to mentor our students. At our Catherine Congress in the spring, students present their research to parents, teachers, mentors and other Catherine Scholar candidates. Catherine Scholars have researched such issues as:
• Internet effects on the family
• The importance of human dignity in caring for the elderly
• Vegetarianism as a natural option to prevent disease
• The role of the doctor’s bedside manner on a patient’s recovery
• America’s role in the Middle East
• Causes of the persistence of racism in America
• The effectiveness of the foster care system
• The role of music therapy for people with cancer
Students are accepted into the scholars program on the basis of a 3.8 grade point average, reflective essay, teacher recommendations, and an interview.
