Peace Receives Boost for Engineering Program

Burbank, IL – November 27, 2007 – On Nov. 27, The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc. gave Queen of Peace High School a curricular boost. IEEE awarded Peace a $3,200 grant for its Infinity Project. The Infinity Project is a nationally recognized pre-engineering program that motivates high school students to pursue engineering degrees in college. Queen of Peace High School is the only all-female high school in the state of Illinois to offer this program to its students. In doing so, the school takes steps to motivate young women to pursue careers in technology.

The IEEE Foundation is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation established in 1973 in the State of New York exclusively to support the scientific and educational purposes of IEEE. Today it raises money, invests money, manages its investments, and supports activities of special interest to members of the engineering profession in four areas: awards, education, history, and special initiatives intended to improve the quality of life of all people throughout the world.

The mission of the IEEE Foundation is to promote a global understanding of how technology is created and impacts society. To achieve such goals, the IEEE Foundation seeks to award grants to innovative programs, preserve the history of electro-technology, nurture a lifelong appreciation of technological literacy, and recognize scientific and engineering excellence. The IEEE Foundation awards grants to projects that seek to improve the worldwide technological literacy of society from childhood through adulthood.

Expanding curricular focus through the introduction of a 1:1 wireless laptop program this past August, Peace was also able to launch the pilot year of its Infinity Project this past August. With steady enrollment, increased student interest, and continued fundraising, a second year of the program will launch next school year. The IEEE Foundation grant will help defray second-year program costs.

Queen of Peace High School is committed to preparing women not only for college, but for lifelong learning by empowering intellectual, spiritual, moral and emotional growth. Peace’s mission calls to search for truth, to encourage collaboration, to instill leadership, to promote dedication to service and to inspire a passion for peace and justice.
