Burbank, IL – September 11, 2007 – On Sept. 6, Queen of Peace parents had the opportunity to feel like students again. During the school’s annual Back to School Night, parents enjoyed a presentation on technology integration, picked up a copy of their daughter’s schedule, and rotated through classes just as their daughters would during a normal school day.
The evening began with a technology briefing by Barbara Smith, Peace’s director of technology integration. Parents learned how to access Edline, a program that allows both parents and students direct access to grades, progress, assignments, courses and communication with teachers. Parents also explored the various resources students have available on their laptops. Smith demonstrated how Atomic Learning works, an online tutor providing short video clips about how to maneuver through most software programs. Parents also viewed examples from Vital Resources, a reference tool loaded onto each student’s laptop that provides thousands of research pieces on varying topics.
After the presentation, parents visited their daughters’ classes. During these seven-minute periods, parents met instructors and received an overview of course content and expectations for success.
At the end of the mini school day, parents enjoyed refreshments in the café, where they met with teachers one-on-one to ask any questions. The objective of Peace’s Back to School Night is to cultivate a welcoming, open environment at the onset of the school year, create stronger relationships among parents and teachers, and give parents a taste of Peace’s rigorous curriculum.
“The evening presents us with the opportunity to get the good news about Peace out. We are proud of our philosophy, the wealth of skill and talent of our instructors, the variety and quality of our curriculum, and the beauty of our school,” Stacy Kolack, assistant principal for student life, stated.
