Burbank, IL – January 30, 2008 –On Jan. 19, Queen of Peace High School hosted the final regular season contest of the 2007-08 Catholic Math League South. Eleven schools and over 350 students and staff braved the frigid temperatures and sub zero wind chills to attend. The competition began in the cafeteria with a welcome address and prayer led by Barbara Smith, Peace’s assistant principal.
The first contests of the day were the individual competitions of Algebra I (frosh), Geometry (sophomores), Algebra II (juniors) and Pre-Calculus (seniors). Students had 50 minutes to complete 20 problems. Other competitions included frosh-sophomore two-person, junior-senior two-person, frosh-sophomore eight-person, junior-senior eight-person, calculators and oral presentations.
In the two-person competitions, students cannot use calculators and points are given based on how quickly the problem is answered correctly. In the eight-person competitions, students work together on 20 problems in 50 minutes and submit one set of answers per school. The calculator team is made up of five members who have 20 minutes to individually complete a set of 20 questions. Oral competitions are completed by one member of each school.
Top scorers for Queen of Peace included Emma Point in Algebra I, Julia Amador in Geometry, Darlene Ariel in Algebra II, and Cindy Wojtaszek in Pre-Calculus.
