Peace Develops Leadership Abilities in Grade Schoolers
|
Burbank, IL – March 3, 2008 – On Feb. 23, Queen of Peace High School hosted its annual Grammar School Leadership Conference. Over 35 sixth and seventh grade girls from seven area grammar schools participated in the half-day event at Peace. Those schools included St. Germaine, St. Gerald, St. Mary of Czestochowa, St. Albert the Great, St. Gall, St. Christina and Bridgeport Catholic Academy. Participants were chosen by their grammar school teachers based on budding leadership qualities.
Peace students who hold leadership roles in the school facilitated the event. During the conference, grade schoolers took part in icebreaker and teambuilding activities, as well as explored current research on leadership styles, working together to solve problems and communicate group work publicly. They also learned the art of goal setting, negotiation and the power of having a positive mental attitude. The objective of Peace’s leadership conference is to develop and nurture students’ leadership styles and ultimately help students feel more confident in their abilities.
“The young women who facilitated as well as attended the conference have skills in place that will allow them to become great leaders in the classroom and in life. I enjoyed watching these emerging leaders work together. The sixth and seventh graders learned that to lead effectively one must look within and also be able to listen to others. Each young woman here exuded the talent and drive to become a true leader. I look forward to seeing what they will do in the future,” conference moderator Rosemary Scanlan commented.
